“8 Row” the place where you can just be yourself!

|
Situated at Krian Road in downtown Penang, the “8-row” premise with its
Baba-Nyonya style facade has been described as a “classy heritage
showpiece”.
The pre-war houses have been restored for practical utilization,
modeled after Singapore’s Clarke Quay.
|
|
|
Now the “8-Row” is a dream come true for those who love to have
a wonderful selection of food & beverage to choose from, to dine or just
enjoy your favourite beverage either within or outdoors surrounded with the rich
heritage Penang can offer.
The outlets are offering mouthwatering local favorites such as
BBQ & Steamboat, Chinese & Local delights, porridge and even “Mee Sua
Tow”. And for those who just want to chill out and have some cool and refreshing
beverage with light food, there are outlets offering Café, Bistro and Lounge
style services. So make it a must to come to “8 Row” where friends and family
members alike will enjoy good food, beverage and entertainment the way the
locals do it!

Before Renovation |
|
Here is some information for those history buffs. Few people
know about the history or transformation of 8-Row houses.
Build in 1927 by
R.K.S Rawater as residential units, this surviving row of 16 terrace houses were
designed in eclectic Straits architectural style.
|
The 8-Row is named to indicate eight houses on the lower floor and eight on the
upper floor.
The turn-of-the-century housing for middle class Baba-Nyonya
families was preserved through a viable adaptive re-use venture. Each of the 16
units has been carefully restored to retain all existing artisan and decorative
works. |

|
It is a hip-and-happening place targeting the young, sociable
crowd and “night owls”, with similarities of Singapore’s Boat Quay and a touch
of Kuala Lumpur’s Bangsar.
Original pre-war terracotta roof tiles were sourced to replace
metal sheets. Traditional timber louver shutters and fanlights were crafted in
place of glass and aluminum windows. Delicate lime-plastered moldings covered
missing and damaged decorative features.
|
| Remained unchanged are the decorated façade of dainty stucco, carved wooden
doors and bat-shaped vents above the windows. |
